Help plan my first PC

My brother is swapping out his 970 for a 1080 and giving it to me so I'm building my first gaming PC. I only have the graphics card so I'm trying to get everything else for it; cpu, ram, motherboard etc. I'm looking to spend between $300-400 for the rest of what I need. I've been looking at systems with an i3 in them but I'm not opposed to AMD solutions, I just want a system that runs decently well. Any ideas for cheap components?
