The BIOS is the "operating system" of your motherboard. Kinda sorta anyway. It is what loads up before windows starts loading. Pressing F2 or whatever your pc wants when turning it on will get you into the BIOS page where you can change settings that will affect how certain hardware functions. Generally speaking, you wont need to fiddle with this once its set up unless you do big hardware changes such as changing your boot hard drive or adding a GPU if you didn't have one before.

 

It is good to upgrade it if you are experiencing certain types of issues, but most people will tell you to not touch it if everything is working fine.t

When in doubt, re-format.
