I am fixing a rig for a friend the pc won't run games at a steady frame playing gta well below vram limit stutters from 60fps to 100fps to 1fps idk why then it crashes after a few minutes any ideas

 

Specs

Gtx 950sc

16gb ddr3

evga 500watt psu

fx6300 stock heatsink

asrock 970mpro3

check temps, then check overclocks then report back

Anyway..

No idea if its only GTA5 now or more games, and if so which ones.. but focusing just on GTA5:

That CPU is somewhere around the bare minimum for the game and not even OC'd as I assume. GTA5 is one of the heavisest CPU titles out there atm and on top of that it has several options that will mainly just put strain on the CPU itself, like population density. So if any of these are enabled, thats pretty much the first cause of the issue(s), just put everything on advanced settings on minimum and test again. That should at least stop the game from crashing.

 

For the FPS drops from 60 to 100 thats

a.) normal in GTA5

and b.) fairly certain that CPU is bottlenecking the GPU.

Amdahls law > multicore CPU.
