Hi guys,

I think Linus made a video once, explaining that Quadro cards can display 10-bit (correct?) color, which is a bit more dense than the normal gpus.

And this is very useful for content creation, in order to catch the correct coloring.

But do you need special screens in order to see the difference?

Using Samsung SA700D (or something like that, 23" samsung 1080p screen, 120Hz)

Please clarify for me.

-I've recently aquired a Quadro FX 580 xD

Yes it would have to be a 10 bit panel

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

The cheapest 10-bit panel I know, a true 10-bit color monitor, is from DELL.  Costs around $1000 where I live.

Wow, what the actual #¤"#.

They're that expensive, because they know only businesses buy them or what?

I'd say that that's the 'natural' price point for a good monitor. The fact that consumers are not willing to pay that, is why we're stuck with less-accurate 8-bit displays...

The DELL UP2715K, officially listed as costing around $2200 on their website but where I live it is half that.

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04&sku=up275k3

There is also this model, but I am not sure if this is true 10-bit or 8+2 bit.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1194916-REG/dell_up3216q_32_widescreen_led.html

There are some monitors claiming 10-bit color for prices under $1000, but I am not sure if they are true 10-bit or achieve it using 8+2 bit FRC.

Oh and of course to really utilize the power of 10-bit color you also need to have the software that supports it.  Additionally, consumer GPUs (nVidia) at least supports 10-bit color in DirectX, but is not supported for professional software like Photoshop or Premiere because they use OpenGL and not DirectX.

They're for professional use. 10-bit color doesn't really matter for normal people.

But if normal consumer can't see them anyway, due to 8-bit panels, then what's the point? :o

Oh normal consumers can see it (or they would if given a side by side), they just don't care enough to drop $1000 on it.  That, and they don't know they exist or how it would help them.  I often find myself "seeing" the 8-bit-ness of my panel where the step between one colour and the next (like 020202 and 020203 for example) is clearly visible.  I also like to blame my native (static) 3000:1 contrast for making it worse :D but man it is nice for watching movies on...
