Hello I am having trouble fixing a Toshiba satellite c660 as it seems to boot up normal but what ever I do to it, it will only stay on for 30 seconds then completely shut off. The weird thing about it is that the fans speed increase like it is overheating but it isn't because it don't get hot.

From my experience it may only be the battery (really low capacity which causes it to shut off) or overheating, does it only stay on for 30 seconds if you are in BIOS for example? Because that would mean it is either overheating or you're having a software problem

The laptop has been plugged in charging for some time and the charging light is on. so I don't think it's the battery as it will still power on without it.

Yes, I can do whatever I want, go in to the bios, try to boot, etc... but as soon it passes 30 seconds from pressing the on button it turns off.

Not to sure about overheating as it has a laptop cooler under it with the RAM and CPU exposed to it.

Do you get to windows or not because if you don't you might need to reset your boot drive in BIOS.

So it could probably even be a motherboard problem.

Doing a quick search for "Toshiba satellite c660 turn off after 30 seconds" seems to give quite a few results and one guy at Tom's Hardware apparently fixed it by doing this:

" First take the battery out, make sure the AC adapter is not connected, press the power button like 10 times and on the 11th press and hold it down for around 30 seconds. Let go and connect the AC adapter (leave battery out for now) and try powering it on... see if it stays on after that "

I have not got a hard drive in it so I am using a SD card with Arch Linux on it but it will still only boot for 30 seconds. And the SD card will boot on a different computer just fine.

is it referring to the bios battery or the laptop battery?

Laptop battery, also, if that doesn't solve it, some people are apparently having problems with the power button? in that case try to get into windows and do this: Go into power settings and click on "choose what pushing power button does..."
Set every selection to "do nothing"
Save changes....

Nope, still not staying on, also I can't try

because I don't have an operating system on it yet because I have no HDD in the laptop, plus it won't stay on long enough to install one so I am trying to boot into a SD Card with Arch on it.

Motherboard could be shorted, or it's the common problem with the power button on toshiba laptops, they wear out causing them to act like they're pressed down explaining why your laptop would power down always exactly after 30 seconds. You would go about fixing this by taking apart the laptop, there are guides on the net which will help you take apart the laptop and fix the problem with the power button for cheap (pretty much using tape and household items) , you'll find the guide just by googling it, since you have no OS basically, I really think it's a hardware problem and since I never really owned the laptop I'm not sure I can help you any further, good luck my friend.

Just taken out the RAM and it still turns off. Not even a beep like on desktops.

So it's either the motherboard or the Power button, I mean, if you still have warranty you can try to take it back to Toshiba (I'm not even sure if it's an old laptop, I didn't check), if everything else fails take it to a technician.

Hmm, interesting, from using the arch Linux hardware detection tool it says that it has 4 cores and 8 threads but looking on the intel website it says it is got 2 cores and 4 threads.

Which exact CPU do you have? And are you able to get the laptop booted more than 30 seconds now?

The CPU is a Core I3 M380, No it will still only boot for about 30 seconds. I have to quickly navigate the arch Linux bootable to get the hardware detection tool up.

Also I have tried memtest and it says it has 4 cores active but it still only boots for about 30 seconds.

I have tried only enabling only 1 core in the bios and the temperature drops to 35*C and it still turns off around 30 seconds.

I'm sorry, I really have no damn idea what this could be, maybe post your problem in a forum specialized for Toshiba laptops or laptops in general? Try to take it to a technician? I would help you but at this point in time I have no idea what else could it be other than trying to take the laptop apart completely, taking out the motherboard and testing it only by itself using an external monitor to see if it's a problem somewhere else besides the motherboard, but even if you did that, it probably wouldn't answer any of your questions
