Hi there!

I just put together my kind of scrapyard-budget build pc. It has a old xeon x5470 cpu which I modded to LGA771 so it could run in my Asus P5Q Deluxe motherboard.
Now, whenever I turn on my PC, it says that I need to "Update my bios to unleash the full power of the CPU". My software side of PC building is not my strongest point, so I was hoping that you could maybe help me out with this.
What new BIOS should I install, and what would be the best way to do so?

Thanks!

Never touch a eunning system, expecially if it wants to install a bios version which doesn't support your CPU.

Why should I not touch a running system? Also, it didn't say what BIOS to install. It just said to update. How do I know if my CPU is not supported?

If your computer boots and runs, your CPU is supported. Updating the BIOS is a huge risk to take, especially on older motherboards that don't have a dual-BIOS system.

My current build :

Hurricane Mk.I

  • CPU - Intel Core i5-4690K @ 4.6 GHz ~ 1.25V
  • Cooling - Corsair H60 2013 Edition
  • Motherboard - Gigabyte Z97MX-Gaming 5 (mATX)
  • RAM - 16 GB DDR3-1600 Avexir Core Series (Red LEDs)
  • GPU - XFX Radeon R9 Fury X @ 1100/500 MHz -24 mV
  • Case - CoolerMaster MasterCase Pro 3
  • SSD - 256 GB ADATA SX900
  • HDD - 1 TB Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM
  • PSU - Corsair RM750 (750W 80+ Gold)
  • Display - LG 34UM67-P Ultrawide (Freesync)
  • Keyboard - CM Storm Quickfire TK (Cherry MX Red) + CM Masterkeys Pro S RGB (Cherry MX Blue)
  • Mouse - Razer DeathAdder 2013
  • Audio - Sennheiser HD598 SE with detachable mic
  • OS - Windows 10 Home Edition
  • VR - Lenovo Explorer Windows Mixed Reality Headset
  • Laptop - ASUS K501LX with i7-5500U and GTX 950M

The P5Q Deluxe does have a dual-BIOS system if I recall correctly, is my PC not bottlenecked by this ancient BIOS that I'm running right now? (I have no idea how this stuff works)

You're right, it does have a dual BIOS. However, since this board doesn't actually support Xeons, updating to a newer BIOS may render your system unusable (you never know, when using modded socket CPUs), and it can be a real pain to restore the working BIOS (who knows if it works, too). I wouldn't update it.

I understand, thank you. What about the bottleneck though?

If you did the 771 to 775 mod, it's likely that you had to use a modified BIOS that supports your 771 CPU, if you update your BIOS, the working one is going to be erased.

That would mean I got extremely lucky. I bought the board online from a guy who didn't know anything about it, I put in my CPU and it just... worked.

I will not push this luck any further then. Thank you!
