Looks good to me. An alternative is to go for a 780 and perhaps a better Mobo or something... Just An idea. An if it's matx, how would two 780's compare to one Titan, bearing in mind it's not too much more with a budget like that

780 SLI would kill TITAN.

wait for the prodigy M (mATX version) and build a system in that, like 4670k, r9-290x, z87 gryphon, kraken x40, 8gb of ram, rm power supply 250gb intel ssd. 

Cpu:4670k- at stock.... for now Gpu:r9-280x crossfire Cooler:KrakenX40 MB:mpower SP Ram:8gb hyperX beast

it really depends on what you mean by "portable". If your friend is super big it might not be an issue. But one thing that I would recommend is SSDs. You really don't want to be moving HDDs that often, in I assume a car, you could do that with $2k. And if you do get HDDs get a case with hotswap bays so you can just take them out when needed.
