Hello,

I have a MSI X99A sli plus and I'm looking to add a thunderbolt card. I found this list of cards on Thunderbolt's official site : https://thunderbolttechnology.net/products?tid=16&field_company_nid=All&field_prod_os_value_many_to_one=All&field_prod_tb_version_value_many_to_one=All.

From what I understand, all these are compatible with only certain motherboards.

Question 1 :

Is there a thunderbolt card that could be compatible with my motherboard ?

By looking at Gygabite's GC-Thunderbolt 2 product page and looking through the installation procedure (http://www.gigabyte.fr/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5210#ov), it mentions at one point the card needs to be connected to the GPU's display port out. It also mentions that the other DP in on the card needs to be plugged into a second GPU DP out in order to activate the second Thunderbolt port on the card.

Question 2 :

What's the deal with using GPU's DP ports with this card ? Is it a common procedure with all Thunderbolt cards ? If so, I have a Firepro W4100 2GB with 4 mini DP ports, will that work as well ?

Thanks in advance.

Yes the one you linked should be fine.

Yes, Its to allow for display over thunderbolt.

Yes with adapter.

Keep in mind this is TB2 while the current standard is TB3

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

I know about TB2. What I was worried about is the procedure linked (http://www.gigabyte.fr/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5210#ov) states the following :

Step 2:
Connect one end of the THB_C header cable to the TB Header on the Thunderbolt™ add-in card.

Step 3:
Connect the other end of the cable to the THB_C header on the motherboard.

I can't do that with my current motherboard though, so can it be compatible ?

That could be an issue. Safer to find a card that doesnt need it.
