Hi, i just changed the thermal paste on my GMA's Computer and it started shutting down after maybe 10 mins of use.  i used arctic silver 5 for the thermal paste and i know that it needs to cure but the processor is a p4. yes i know it is old but it works for her and as of right now i or her don't plan to get a new one.  i did a pea sized amount and when i turned it on after applying it the system showed lower temps.  soons after i tried to restart it to go into the bios to see the temps of the CPU becuase for some reason no program would tell me then when it turned off the stayed off and the power light was still on green.  that told me that the system shut down due to heat.  is this normal??

EDIT:  forgot to mention the old thermal paste was like baked on and was hard to get off and i dont think i got all of it off.  their was like a dark spot on the cpu from where the old thermal paste

Did you remount the cooler properly? Did you plug the cooler fan back in? Those are the first two things that I would check. (Yes, they are basic mistakes, but even I do it sometimes.)

Green light after "off" can mean a Hibernation/Sleep state.

To read temps from Pentium 4 you need AIDA64/Everest or HWMonitor and even then CPU Temp will be measured by one sensor.

Pea size may not be enough - check if paste spreaded equally on heatspreader/cooler. I suspect that paste didn't cover all of contact space between IHS and cooler.

the system power light is green when i restarted it and it just did nothin. i want to wait and see if the thermal paste cures and see if it makes a difference and yes i did plug the fan in and i did mount the cooler correctly but i might have to find a new one because one of the clips did break off or at least one side did.  will keep u informed if anything i will let her use one of my old computer that work perfectly fine.

It's almost definitely a mounting problem. Having a perfectly even mount on the cooler is critical to good temps. I had an issue with high temps due to the cooler being just barely askew (not even noticeable). Remounting the cooler with the mobo out of the case (so you can get flat even pressure) dropped my temps by 20C instantly. The thermal compound cure will not make a huge temp difference, you should have normal temps immediately after mounting new paste.

Having issues with a Corsair AIO? Possible fix here:

Spoiler

Are you getting weird fan behavior, speed fluctuations, and/or other issues with Link?

Are you running AIDA64, HWinfo, CAM, or HWmonitor? (ASUS suite & other monitoring software often have the same issue.)

Corsair Link has problems with some monitoring software so you may have to change some settings to get them to work smoothly.

-For AIDA64: First make sure you have the newest update installed, then, go to Preferences>Stability and make sure the "Corsair Link sensor support" box is checked and make sure the "Asetek LC sensor support" box is UNchecked.

-For HWinfo: manually disable all monitoring of the AIO sensors/components.

-For others: Disable any monitoring of Corsair AIO sensors.

That should fix the fan issue for some Corsair AIOs (H80i GT/v2, H110i GTX/H115i, H100i GTX and others made by Asetek). The problem is bad coding in Link that fights for AIO control with other programs. You can test if this worked by setting the fan speed in Link to 100%, if it doesn't fluctuate you are set and can change the curve to whatever. If that doesn't work or you're still having other issues then you probably still have a monitoring software interfering with the AIO/Link communications, find what it is and disable it.

might need to get a new cooler for it then will have to do some looking around but i did not grab the mother board model number to see if it will work will have to see next time i go down their. supprisling it is some what like the ones you get today push pins will need to look around and see what i can find.

well i might have some bad news my gma tried to power her system on and it wont power on.  at this point it is more than likely a done deal with the CPU Frying itself but i am not giving up hope on it as because of the fact that i can still try and repair it next time i go down their.  i will be taking a spare power supply and my thermal paste but i am hoping that i can get that cpu cooler to work even though more than likely i will need to replace it.  at the very least i can also let my Gma use one of my old computers mainly a Dell Optiplex GX520 that has about the specs but more ram and maybe a better processor. of that is the case i will need to bring this system home with me for further repairs but at least she will have a working system until then.

well i was so wrong it turns out that someone above told me to check the fan and it turns out that it was not plugged in correctly.  it was plugged in but 1 pin to far to the right so that was a problem also the problem with it not powering on was just the switch on the ps was off.  :P LOL  Now that the fan is running the system is working well got to about 70 to 71 C which is still how but it did not go past that so it should work.
