SSHD only have about 32-64GB of SSD space on it. So its not really worth it. And you cant pick what you want on the cache either. So just get a desktop drive. although an ssd would be a better choice.

yea, i already have a 250gb samsung 850 evo but i want it for OS and a few programs like Photoshop, would there be much speed difference with USB 3.0 and sata?

If it's a game you play often, the SSHD will eventually decrease load times. But if it's something you don't play a lot or once in a while, then get a larger drive.

There's also almost no difference between USB 3.0 and SATA and I've comfortably played games from an external USB 3.0 drive.

Hey there :)

Gaming doesn't really rely on the storage's performance for anything but the loading times so regardless of which drive you are using you would only see a decrease in the loading times. FPS and graphics aren't really affected in any way. The only difference you may notice from using faster storage would be in games such as MMOs or Open World games where the surrounding textures would load faster or smoother but their quality won't be impacted, nor would be the FPS.

I'd suggest checking out WD Blue and WD Black as potential expansion drives (if you are looking for an internal drive) or WD My Book for an external DAS device.

Post back if you have any additional questions :)

I think you should watch this video first to get in in-depth understanding of a HDD vs a SSHD

I'd still reconsider this as the 8GB SSD portion would be holding only the files of the most-used applications and OP has zero control over what goes there. The additional points of failure and the added price may not be worth the rather small gain on the loading side of only part of the games.

Linus does point out that these drives are good for having your OS on (especially when you don't have a second bay for a pure SSD) and if you are only using your system for just a few things, but storing 4TB or 5TB games on a single disk would hardly give you loading speed gain over more than just a few of them. :)
