My friend is getting a graphics card for me from the US. However the packaging is too big for him to carry with him. Will it be a problem if I have to RMA the card if it doesn't have the original packaging? And how would you recommend packing it to prevent it from getting damaged. He's mostly going to check in the baggage in which he's carrying the card

the main thing you want to prevent static buildup. put the card in a brown paper bag, to prevent buildup inside, and wrap that in aluminium foil to ground any outside shocks. you may want to check the rma/warranty policy for the specific card manufacturer, but generally you need original packaging for an rma.
