System in question:

- Little brother's desktop pc

-  GPU: MSI GTX 760

MOBO: ASRock (will find full specs if need be)

   CPU: AMD Fx-6350

Sound: Onboard on the Mobo, Asus Xonar DG soundcard

The problem: Two weeks ago all audio outputs on my little brother's computer excluding the HDMI cable on the gpu stopped working.  I have tried several pairs of headphones, earbuds, etc., nothing is working with the front panel or back panel audio jacks.  He can not pinpoint any event which may have caused the failure, and i was unable to find any.

What I've tried to fix it:

- Installed an asus Xonar DG sound card, installed drivers properly, connected to front panel and regular outputs, none of which made a sound.  Probably going to send this back since it doesn't seem to be addressing the problem.

- Reinstalled drivers, updated drivers, uninstalled driver.  You name it, and I'm pretty sure I've tried it in this department.

- Booted through Ubuntu on a usb.

- Disabled/enabled audio devices under 'manage audio devices'

- Disabling/enabling audio outputs in the BIOS

The odd thing is, the computer always recognizes that the headphones are plugged in, and shows that they're working under 'manage audio devices' with the green sound bars to the right of the listed device.  Really don't know where to go from here.  Only other "solution" I can think of would be to split the audio from the HDMI, but we'd like to avoid spending the ~30$ on that if we could.

Thanks!

Reinstall OS?

I haven't gone as far as reinstalling windows entirely, but I have booted from Ubuntu... which I assume would have nearly the same effect?  When I booted from ubuntu though, even the HDMI audio didn't seem to be working.
