So I'm running a radeon 4850 with 2 dvi connectors and i just bought a $10 computer monitor from gumtree (australia's craigslist) and it only has a vga cord inbuilt. When i try to use an adapter from dvi-i to vga i get no signal so what i want to know is am i able to buy a crappy graphics card with a vga connector and use that to connect to the monitor but still use the 4850 for all my applications. Thanks in advance

Yes, you can.

The card being used for video output will do all the rendering though, so his other graphics card won't be used in gaming for example, only the crappy one will.
