In the next 2 months I will be conducting my first big build. I will have anywhere between $2000 or $3000 US dollars to spend on a rig that will be for photo editing , video editing , CAD drawings, and also regular everyday use. What I was also hoping to do was to turn the rig into my offsite backup for my NAS at home. I have already chose the monitor and it's going to be 1  LG 34UC87M-B - LED monitor for now. And next year purchase a second. My NAS at home is four 5TB Drives in RAID 5 setup. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I left out the GPU as we have two new GPUS being released this month:  The GTX 1070 and the R9/RX 480.

I went with 4xGB stick of RAM as X99 supports quad channel.  If you are sure you will need more than 16GB of RAM:  http://pcpartpicker.com/product/cbtWGX/gskill-memory-f43000c15q32grk

If you are not sure if more than 16GB will be needed, then grab a 2x8GB set for now.  This leaves you the extra two slot to expand in to:  http://pcpartpicker.com/product/MYH48d/corsair-memory-cmk16gx4m2b3000c15

Something has to give in that budget. Monitor is > 800. 8TB HDD are > 330. You need a minimum of three (1,000). For realistic backup six or more would be better (2,000).

Like I said I don't need to go with that monitor. I just thought hat I would have more than enough real estate using that monitor. Unless you think doing dual monitors is a better idea. Also as for the offsite backup I could just get away with using it for backing up everything but my media I stream right now. I have never had a reason to do an offsite backup. That is why I'm looking for opinions.

Will this system be used for gaming?

Other than off-site backup, what sort of storage is needed?

I prefer higher resolution monitors over multiples.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Not crazy gaming. Maybe a little here and there. More for video editing and photo editing and CAD designing.

I'll explain the choices:

  • i7-6700K for the higher base clock speed. Perhaps not as good a choice as an i7-5820K for video editing, much better choice for most CAD and photo editing.
  • inexpensive cpu cooler that is relatively quiet and will allow for a reasonable overclock
  • 32GB of memory for better editing performance
  • large ssd for better editing & overall performance
  • GTX 1080 should improve photo & video editing performance, certainly will improve gaming on the high resolution monitor
  • one large hdd, system will handle four more off the motherboard
