HDD/SSD temperatures

As @Ryan_Vickers pointed out you'd want to look at the operating temperatures as these are the ones that are valid while the drive is operating. The storage temperatures are for when you are simply storing the drive while it is not being used (unplugged from the computer, in a drawer or something like that).

I'd try to keep those temps below 55 just to be on the safe side, but there shouldn't be a problem even if they are above that, as long as they are withing the recommended operating ones in the data sheet. :)

Captain_WD.

I wanted to ask. What are your room temperatures and what your HDDs/SSDs ?

Weather here started to warm up suddenly. We had a huge increase of temperature today.

Are these Idle temperatures normal? On load they both went to 37 celsious and never above that.Room temperature 26 Celsious.

I think for drives at idle being ~10C above ambient is normal.  That's what mine are (30 - 31)

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

I have a Seagate Barracuda and a Western Digital RE3 and they sit, respectively, at 35 and 45 while gaming (GPU pushing hot air into them) and 30 / 40 at idle. I was told that as long as they don't exceed their rated safe temperature you won't be cutting into their life cycle.

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

Which is?

It's dependent on the drives.

Depending on the drive and usually available by looking up the drive's model online. Enterprise drives like the RE3 tend to be rated for higher temps (55) than consumer drives (40-50).

Do we have an average number? 40 -45 is max?

60 degrees Celsius with your hard drive. Not sure about the SSD though, but I imagine it's more rugged than the hard drive.

Hey there Stefanosgr18 :)

Each HDD/SSD model has a recommended operational temperature and as long as they stay within that temperature it should be just fine for them. I'd check the spec sheets of the drives you have and compare the listed temperatures there with the ones you have. Having your drives around 35 degrees should be totally fine :)

If you need any other info I'd be happy to help :)

I should look for operating temperatures or stortage temperatures?
