What will the rig be used for?

Also, use the BB generator to post the build here, not the HTML one

i7 4790k | MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition | G.Skill Ripjaws X 16 GB | Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB | 2x Seagate Barracuda 2TB | MSI GTX 970 Twin Frozr V | Fractal Design R4 | EVGA 650W

If it's purely for gaming, go with a 6600k and get a GTX 1080

I would not recommmend seagate hdds. spend a few $ on one from western digital or hitachi. also if your cousin wants an oc on his cpu then a budget aio/ high end be quiet or noctua air cooler would help. If he is only gaming, 8gb ram is plenty for now. To run a 390 u need 750w. otherwise solid build!

About 50 - 100 FPS in most games

switch to 6600k, not sure why you need a optical drive you can just install windows off a usb stick and get a hgst nas drive instead of seagate by far less failure rates :)

also 980 ti or fury x might be better though fury non-x could be an option

Changes:

  • Swapped 6700k to 6600k, games do great on the 6600k you don't need anything more
  • Changed to MSI PRO MOBO, cheaper. Not as good for OCing so let me know if he wants to OC a lot
  • Cheaper but still awesome case (I have the Fractal R4 which great)
  • Replaced 390 with 1080
  • Better quality PSU
  • Cheaper windows key from /r/microsoftsoftwareswap

If that extra 50 bucks is still to much, go with the 1070 ($379)

Tell him to wait, it is well worth it.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Seagate hard drives. Also you don't need 750W to run a single R9 390. A good 550W would be enough.

The R9 390 doesn't need 750W, you can easily run two in Crossfire with that. A single R9 390 really only needs a solid 550W PSU.

also a ton of seagate owners say their drive is dead. while you, lee32uk, may not have problems, many people do. I appreciate that horror stories are heard from all brands (welcome to 2016, where customer support is worse than fashion in the 80's) but wd and hitachi seem to have the least.
