Hello everyone,
I currently have a higher low end to lower mid end pc, it can run GTA on mid settings just fine.
But I'm looking to kinda 'start again'. The pc I have now is very odd, the pc case, powersupply, motherboard and heatsink are all made to only work with each other so if I want to upgrade one I need to upgrade them all. I'm going for a red and black build. I'm going for a MSI R9 390 8GB, what would be a good CPU for this? I don't really have a budget as this will be a guide for what I'm saving up for so I can go high-ish end, but of course I'm not looking at going for a £600 CPU anytime soon... I've been told an EVGA 750W supernova is a good PSU for what I would be doing. I'm looking for a red themed motherboard to go along with this.
So I'm looking for:
A PSU
A CPU (To match MSI R9 390 8GB)
A motherboard (Red themed)
Thank you :)

Where does a z170 come into all of this? Do you need a z170 to use a 6700k?

Yes. You need a Z170 chipset motherboard for the LGA1151 socket for the 6700K and also for the overclocking abilities. I've found that the ASROCK Z170 Extreme6 is a great price/performance motherboard for somewhere near $180 US for a new one. Though the price of the overall build is dramatically getting higher. :/

Thank you, that's really useful to know aha. Yeah it is, but that's okay. I have time, I don't need to do it all now ahah.

No problem. But if you wanna get the components quick you can always buy used or refurbished hardware. I mean look at Linus and Bob's build in SYW 4. Performed well and all the components were used.

Yeah, that's very true. Do you know if a gigabyte intel z170 gaming k3 skylake atx motherboard would work? I'm pretty sure it would but I don't know everything to look out for. Is it any good? It fits the colour scheme and it quite cheap too. Thank you.

Nice choice! It's cheaper, fits your theme and has an LGA 1151 socket, 4x DDR4 DIMM slots, PCI-e 16x, 8x and 4x slots. Although the I/O on the ASROCK mobo is a bit better than this one but definitely not worth sacrificing the money and the flow of the theme.

Alright I think that's the motherboard sorted then :D
So far it's:
A gigabyte intel z170 gaming k3 skylake atx
Intel-I7 6700k
EVGA 750W Supernova
MSI R9 390 8GB
But I need 16gb of red ddr4 ram...

You can either choose from the G.SKILL Ripjaws 4 Series 4 x 4GB C15 memory or the Corsair Vengeance LPX 2 x 8GB C14 memory.

You don't need a z170 chipset to run an i7 6700k, Any chipset can run that processor. Its just that the z170 chipset allows k-series cpus to be overclocked.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

Thank you, I will have to look into the both of them. But I think it's better to use all 4 slots as 4x4gb than just 2 2x8gb? Also... If this is the right place to do so; could someone explain how ram channels work? I watched Linus's video on it but it kinda just went over my head...
Thank you.

Also (I know I've asked alot of dumb questions. But you guys have been awesome to help me so much) What would be a good heatsink for the Intel-I7 6700K. Does the motherboard affect what Heatsink I need? Or are the sizes generic? Also, I have a Corsair Carbide Spec-03 which this all needs to fit into.
Thank you.

First of all, how RAM channels work as far as I know. Considering the motherboard you have selected for your upcoming build that is a GIGABYTE Z170 K3 ATX, there are four DIMM slots on it and they are coupled together using color codes in two pairs. One pair of DIMM slots is red and the other is black. That means this is a dual-channel board because it has two separate pairs of DIMM slots. And while there will be no negative impact in performance if you use the Ripjaws 4 x 4GB Quad-channel sticks, you're better off buying the Vengeance 2 x 8GB Dual-channel memory and install the two sticks on either the red DIMM slots or the black DIMM slots because 6700K only supports dual-channel memory and the other DIMM slots can be free for any RAM that you want to install in the future. Basically, if the CPU supports quad channel memory, that means it receives faster bandwidth of data from the RAM IF the memory sticks are also quad channel which means faster performance which is not the case here.

Mostly, the motherboard will not affect the heatsink and I will recommend a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo but I'm really not sure if it'll fully fit in the case so you will need to find out if it'll actually fit or not. Hope I helped a bit. :)
