Gaming + Editing PC Build

Go to solution Solved by koalaroo,

Closing thread, most problems solved

Thanks guys!

Hi there!

I'm off to university next year and am planning on building a PC that focuses on the following uses;

- Gaming (generally CSGO, GTA V/Online, Rocket League)(also recording for YouTube)

- Video Editing (doing a course on post-production for film and TV)

- Animation (basic stuff in blender and maya, part of the post-production course)

- Recording/Music Production (to a lesser degree, already have sound card, microphone, etc)

I'm not very experienced, only having built one other PC with a friend about 6 months ago, and was hoping that you guys here could help me out with my build.

Graphics card is currently temporary because of the nearing announcement of new cards, and I'll only be buying this around my birthday in November.

Don't get an H97 board with that CPU and liquid cooler, you want a Z97 chipset to allow you to overclock.

Also http://pcpartpicker.com/ is very useful.

The H110iGTX cooler is a far better deal

Gte an SSD, I recommend a 500GB Samsung 850 EVO

Total budget?

Well, with an i7, GTX 1080, Full tower and flashy lights, it can obviously only be for one thing:

Solitaire.

Not sure about current budget, parents are investing based on my end of year marks (in South Africa here, so end of school year is Nov), SSDs are crazy expensive here

take a look at these parts, the i7 5820k is a 6 core, which will help a lot with the video editing.

You want a board that can overclock, or if you are not going to overclock, get an unlocked chip (Not recommended since you're spending so much anyway). And while you're at it, you wouldnt need the cooler if you arent going to overclock, might as well go with stock.

Maybe an SSD for for faster boot times? Though I can see why thats not as important to you. Its just a thought.

Please vote for Donald Trump. I am out of sitcoms to watch.

When lyfe gives you HDDs, make SSDs

Around 2200 rand for a 500 GB SSD, which is around 175-200 USD if I remember correctly

That sounds about right. I remember the good 'ol days when a 500gb ssd would cost you $500. That's fine for an 850 evo, but I'd still get the 250gb 850 because it's a better deal.

Was planning on over clocking, wasn't aware the board chipset made a difference until now

Everyone loves the Z97 for overclocking

Oh okay, just seems expensive for the amount of storage to me

Well it's an SSD. You're paying for speed not capacity.

Is the Z97 a must, or is it optimal?

Yes. It is a must for overclocking a Haswell or Devil's Canyon chip.

Just checked prices now, looking around 3000 rand (http://www.landmarkpc.co.za/store/adata-premier-sp900-512gb-sata-solid-state-drive-p-11960.html) for 500GB. Will keep researching though.

Will go find a good Z97 mobo

I think the 850 evo is better. It's one of if not the fastest SATA SSD currently on the market, it's reliable, and it's really cheap, falling well below the $1usd/GB range.

As for a board, may I recommend the Gigabyte z97 OC force, other gigabyte z97 boards, and MSI z97 boards.

The 850 evo is around the R3000 point, Crucial hits 2300 (http://www.landmarkpc.co.za/store/crucial-bx100-500gb-sata-solid-state-drive-p-13173.html)

I've heard a bit of good about Crucial but Samsung really gets all the praise

Crucial SSDs are good, but from what I've seen they aren't as fast. Also I have seen some good Corsair SSDs, but they're not as popular because they're not the best value.

Is the speed difference massive? For 1000 rand cheaper I'm not bothered too much about a bit of a speed drop

These seem to be the best Z97 motherboards that are available through this site

http://www.landmarkpc.co.za/store/asus-maximus-ranger-series-intel-chipset-motherboard-p-11707.html

http://www.landmarkpc.co.za/store/asus-z97c-intel-chipset-motherboard-p-11616.html

http://www.landmarkpc.co.za/store/gigabyte-gaz97xgaming3-intel-chipset-motherboard-p-11852.html

Not sure which to choose, all roughly the same price. Trying to keep the build mostly black, but isn't too big a deal.
