Hi,

recently I've been just browsing a web, watching some YouTube videos and things downloading in the background with some music playing and couple of files open. I had maybe 20 tabs and a lot with you know, tumblr/meme pictures as I tend to just collect them in Chrome. And I was playing some steam games from time to time with all that stuff open and never had any issue. Until now. Suddenly there appeared and error saying that I should close some programs to prevent data loss or stuff like that. I closed it but then the PC froze, the screen went black but it didn't shut down immediately. It was a good 5 minutes till the fans stopped spinning. I reopened it again, reloaded all the tabs to artifically fill the memory, put some videos in both chrome and Video Player in windows. And guess what - the same error as before. I quickly closed the Chrome and looked into the Task Manager. It stated that used memory on the graph was like 4,8/8GB while the "Commited memory" was 31,5/32GB. What is wrong with my PC? Will another stick of 8GB RAM solve the problem or do I just need to reinstall the OS?

Thanks in advance.

I need S340. But more Define S'ish

normally the pc detects that the ram runs out and starts to close stuff. if your a tab monster 16gb of memory will stop you from reloading pages but crashes are a problem with the os

Okay, but what do you think might have caused this? (yeah, Chrome, I know) but.. Some kind of malware? Memory leakage? Damn, I could play some really intensive games before and now it crashes on simple web browsing..

EDIT: I have not restarted the PC for maybe 4 days, just sleep and hibernate cycles if that may help.

Don't reinstall just yet. It seems like something is running in the background.

To fix this:

1. Decrease your browsing habits a bit. Chrome is a RAM hog, as Linus our lord and savoir preaches. Every tab you have open, and every extension you run will add to that. On my machine if I run maybe 4 tabs and an adblock extension, it will easily take 1.8gb of ram.

2. Check in task manager, what is using all the ram at an idle. you should not be idling with more than 20% RAM usage.

3. Run CCleaner (regardless of what the problem is. It's like duct tape for PCs) CCleaner can tell you if there is stuff running in the background, and from there you can disable it.

4. You can add another stick. 16gb is becoming the norm for enthusiasts and gamers.

as a last resort, reinstall.

System and compressed memory was on the first (2,5GB) place, then was the main Chrome process which took maybe 400MB.

Actually I plan to reinstall it as soon as I get an SSD so won't clean it is a pile of junk no matter how hard I try to clean it ;)

Another stick is on my list but actually have many more things to buy.

Idle it okay, maybe 20-25%

So the only solution for that seems to be closing the tabs, thank You!
