4k or 2k?

I was wondering on your thoughts of witch way to go when it comes to 4k monitor or a 2k monitor.  My buddy and I both have high end systems, his is driving two 980ti's and mine two 980's and both are currently on the x99 platform with 5820k and 5830k cpus.

Would 4k be the way we lean towards or 2k? I'm personally leaning towards the 2k monitors in general with ips and gsync and decent refresh rate. I know there is scaling issues with 4k and Windows 10 and certain triple A titles such as the division would even be hard to run in 4k at 60fps.. 4k will be the future but it's still in mind not there yet.

What would you the community recommend and reasons why? Does anyone have similar setup and what did you pick? I will not put a budget on this.

Well, with dual 980 Ti's I think 2K would be a bit low :P You'd probably want at least 2.5K if not 4K. It's a bit of a weird time to buy 4K right now, since with current interfaces they're limited to 60 Hz. Once DisplayPort 1.3 becomes available we should start seeing some 120 Hz 4K monitors, and that will be fairly soon, with NVIDIA's and AMD's next generation cards introducing DP 1.3 support. I'm not sure it's a great idea to invest in a really high-end 4K monitor with that around the corner. Although that being said, you can get some pretty decent 4K IPS monitors for a decent price ($500-600). Scaling is also much better on Windows 10 than it was on 7 or 8.

If you're really into gaming though, I think it's a better choice to go with a 2.5K monitor like the ASUS PG279Q or the Acer XB271HU, the resolution is still good and the high refresh rate is really great for gaming. I don't think we'll see really great 4K "gaming" monitors until DisplayPort 1.3 allows us to get 120 Hz at that resolution.

3440x1440 will run above 100Hz/100fps with Dual GPU's... which is a plus... also 4K 60+...

But I'm not interested in 4K until they break the 100Hz barrier...

Thanks for the replies much appreciated!  I have had this setup for a year now and have been holding off on 4k for this reason. Now will one single pascal gpu drive a 1.3 supported monitor?  To early to tell

Indeed, we can only hope...

I think a single Polaris gpu will power a 4k monitor when Polaris gpu comes out... I think when one gpu comes out that has 8gig of hbm, it will do it, I would almost bet the Radeon Core Duo will do it if they have solid drivers for it, but thats asking alot, lol....
