Anything is possible but those typically just drop dead pretty quickly. How long since you cleaned up your data?

this may seem dumb but i installed spotify when all this started happening then ive just uninstalled it and everything seems to be okay could that have been it?

Well if you got it from a different source than it may be a virus, other than that it may have just been a bad version. If spotify has an archive than try an older version and try it. Other than that, I don't know your specs nor spotifys needs, but it may have hogged resources.
