CPU Too Hot

I just popped an i7 4790s into my machine with the stock cooler and it's running quite hot. At idle it's around 40C, and gaming it will go up to 82C. I know stock coolers aren't very good, but some googling showed me that I'm running hot even on stock. My previous CPU, an i5 4570, ran fairly hot too, but never hitting 80C.

Try putting new thermal paste on and check your fans, make sure they all spin. Up the fan speed if that doesn't work. 40 at idle is pretty hot.

What are your ambient temperatures and how's your case ventilation?

I'm using a Corsair 200r case with no additional fans. Cables inside are well managed and everything is dust free. I just installed the CPU, so it's got fresh thermal paste. Ambient is around 69F.

Try reseating the cooler and make sure all the push pins are fully latched. Use the right amount of thermal paste.

Actually, depending of your room temperature, those are normal for a stock cooler.

If your room temperature is 20C and you get those temperatures, then yes, they are higher than normal. But if your room temperature is 25C, then they are normal.

Yep I'd say normal, spend $30 and get a new 212X evo (the new model not old one, might as well right?) my temps with the old 212 evo are 33c idle

Yeah I'm getting a new cooler as soon as budget allows. Is it safe to use until then? Will it significantly shorten its life?

Temperature won't break the cpu as long as it doesn't exceed the maximum temperature by a lot and for long time periods. 82-83C is still within the limitations.

And even then, it usually thermal throttles unless it has been disabled.
