serious sam hd multiplayer down?

me and a friend picked up the humble bundle with serious sam in it, we played co-op the first night and have not been able to connect to each other or any server since then.

it sucks that game is fun but more fun with a partner.  any ideas on how to fix if it is not a widespread problem.
