try setting the digital audio as default

I got it working. I disconnected my headphones, disabled my monitor speakers, plugged in my headphones, and windows recognized them. I set the headphones to the default device and it worked

Make sure you have the correct drivers installed. Just type your motherboard model into Google and search for audio drivers.

However, if it is a headset and uses USB, they should have their own drivers which you would then search for.

CPU: i5 4670k @ 3.4GHz + Corsair H100i      GPU: Gigabyte GTX 680 SOC (+215 Core|+162 Mem)     SSD: Kingston V300 240GB (OS)      Headset: Logitech G930

Case: Cosair Vengance C70 (white)                RAM: 16GB TeamGroup Elite Black DDR3 1600MHz       HDD: 1TB WD Blue                              Mouse: Logitech G602

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium                       PSUXFX Core Edition 750w                                                Motherboard: MSI Z97-G45               Keyboard: Logitech G510

not showing up as plugged in, in the playback devices

So, if you play a video you can hear sound?

If this is the case (and you are using a 3.5mm jack to plug it in NOT USB) it will most likely register in playback as the default speakers, changing settings in the default speakers should result to a change in the sound outputted by the headphones.

I have the correct drivers. I've had the PC for 4 months and it was working fine. For some reason it doesnt now. One thing to mention is I receive audio from my built-in monitor speakers instead. I tried disabling them but then I just get no audio at all.

Can you upload a screen shot of your playback devices to a site like imgur and  share it?

I cant set is a default device because it is "not plugged in"
