Hi,

So I saw linus' personal rig video and I'm wondering quite how thunderbolt works. I've looked around online and I can't quite find out.

Basically I'm thinking of moving to Skylake with a 6700k. I already have a GTX970 and two DisplayPort monitors. I don't have space near my desk for my PC itself, so I'd like to use thunderbolt to pass the video from my PC to the monitors, and also take advantage of the USB ports on them.

i was thinking of getting a Gigabyte Z170X UD5 TH which has two thunderbolt connectors. My monitors don't support daisy chaining but I could get a thunderbolt hub which would also allow me to connect my USB interface on the monitors. This should work fine using the HD530 in the 6700k....BUT.... Can this utilise my GTX970 also?

Does the system automagically say "oh look a graphics card" or not?

Why not just run displayport cables and/or usb cables from the PC to the monitor? I'm not sure I understand what youa re trying to do - have your GPU installed inside the PC but run it as an external? The thunderbolt cable is to connect the GPU with the Motherboard without using the PCI interface, not to connect screens to the GPU, which would turn the GPU into an iGPU and it would need some kind of enclosure to get the power and some air flow etc...

No I mean so that I can later attach thunderbolt storage devices and such in a daisy chain fashion. Instead of running a number of cables I can run a single thunderbolt to a thunderbolt hub which can then connect the second display and the USB devices. But I'm not sure whether that uses only the iGPU or the dedicated internal GPU I have.

Like all other display outputs on the motherboard, the thunderbolt ports will use the iGPU.

unless you get a TB card with a DP input

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.
