The reason I got that Mobo,

  • 1)  Has 6 6GB/s ports
  • 2)  Has a built in usb port so i dont have to get an ssd,
  • 3)  Support For ECC

i am thinking about Raid 1 or 5, I am aware redundancy is key, but i need a recommendation BC i want 8TB (archiving\backing up Devices on network and i wont rip movies that is illegal.)

Instead of getting a Pentium, I want to stream for some nights and when i am editing I want to dump raw files then edit that on my computer, then export it on my computer. I edit for a couple of channels.

PS dont sweat calling me an idiot i obviously did something wrong.

Raid 5 is PAINFULLY slow on sata without a raid card.

Go for the raid 1.

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

Honestly, I don't know because I don't raid my drives.

So.... what is the original question?

You signature says something about FreeNAS. You do not use RAID with FreeNAS. FreeNAS uses ZFS which has (basically) software RAID capabolities. A hardware RAID would interfere ZFS and FreeNAS's control of the drives.

RAID5 (or RAIDZ1 in FreeNAS) would give you 12TB of storage and can withstand one disk failure. Writes are slower than a single drive, but you will max out a gigabit connection on read.

Don't try to edit files directly off the NAS. Your network speed will be the limiting factor here.

Oh, and just to add one more thing, Raid5/Z1 with four 4tb drives is basically destined to result in an array failing to rebuild due to a URE, so I'd be looking at Raid6/Z2 instead.
