Help? Malware or Virus?

Hey guys, I recently got a vst(a virtual instrument for music production) specifically called Hypersonic 2 from a friend. I am afraid i got malware or maybe a virus but perhaps im just being paranoid.  I deleted that weird file anyway and im about to delete the vst itself but i am hoping no malware was installed on my computer. What are some symptoms of malware? my pc seems fine so far( i am on windows 8 but bootcamp from my macbook). Do you know how to check if i did get malware? any free anti virus recommendations?
