Max Motherboard Memory?

Go to solution Solved by Neokolzia,

Most boards just have that advertised as a standardized max stick.

8gb sticks are common, 16gb sticks aren't, I don't think there would be any issue, just the manifacturer likely never tested it.

Keep in mind Windows 10 Home, has a 128gb limit I think? and Pro 512gb.   I know the x99 boards show 16gbx8slot setups typically in "maximums".

Most / All motherboards have a Max Memory on their information. the particular motherboard i am looking at ( http://bit.ly/22hAOEe ) has 8 DDR4 Ram slots, but only lists a maximum of 64 GB RAM. (8x 8gb Sticks). What if i were to put 16GB sticks of ram into the motherboard? would it post, and would a system running on more than the Max amount of RAM be stable?

also, what caps out the RAM in general?

I think it would post, just it wouldn't allow you to use the extra ram, or it will not show it.

Thank you for your service!

Regarding OP - if it posts there is a chance it will not address and display all of the memory. Potential that it will not post because the ram modules are too large. Additionally, that may be the original spec on the board. A firmware update might have changed that as well.

Interesting. is there any reason why a board wouldn't be able to support 16GB sticks? or is it just unimplemented software.

could i buy a board, and then have the Max memory change?

Could be a physical limitation for some reason. Could be unimplemented in bios at the time of release because 16gb sticks were not available for testing and validation. No guarantee that it will work with a larger memory specification unless you get the manufacturer to tell you that it will work...or if there is a firmware bios update that says that it adds that feature. If you need such a large memory pool you might want to look for a board that you know for sure will support it.
