What is the best SLR camera for about $250 US? I got a GoPro and really wanted a camera for filming short films, not action shots. The GoPro itself felt too small for a tripod. What is a good one? New would be nice, even though a good, reliable source for used would also be appreciated.

Thanks and have a great day!

SLR... you mean a film SLR or do you actually mean a DSLR (digital)?

$250 is a very tight budget to get even an entry level interchangeable lens camera brand new, and when I mean interchangeable lens camera that includes both DSLRs and Mirrorless.

You would have to look on the second hand market for that budget.

But you can get a pretty decent camcorder, brand new, for $250.  If you go the route of a DSLR/MILC with this budget, where is your budget for accessories like microphones or lighting?

With that camera, for video I personally feel you will be better served with a camcorder.

What you will get with a camcorder compared to the Canon SX520 HS:

  • better frame rates
  • better internal mic
  • a port to plug in an external mic, it doesn't appear as if the SX520 has one
  • better image stabilization
