Reinstall windows after changing cpu

Did I have to reinstall windows? Or just as easy as remove cpu and insert a new one?

I changed from a i5-4670k to an i7-4790k and changed from a Z87-G45 to a Z97 Maximus VII Hero without needing to reinstall windows.

Lucky you, since that's against windows terms of service but oh well

In practice, thats exactly what should happen, however if windows detects the new mobo and decides it voids terms of service you'll get the 'Windows not genuine' message

Call number on activation screen, poke numbers at a robot for 5 minutes, reactivate with no issues. Done this a handful of times on multiple boards.

The big problem is if you use the free Win10 upgrade.....

It's licence is HWID locked so changing the motherboard/CPU will most likely cause the LIc to "un-validate" and since you don't get a key with the upgrade it would require a new key...

If you have a valid key for your current system just call in and follow the automated service...
