Okay, so I've got a problem that's starting to infuriate me. I had a windows PC running (Windows 7 - Upgraded to 8 from Factory) - I decided to install Ubuntu 12.10 a while back; since then, i've got a new PC and i'm using Windows so I was going to give my old PC (Ubuntu OS) to a family member. However, since trying to install Windows 7 back onto the PC i've encountered a shit storm of problems. Using a bootable CD with the Windows 7 ISO on it will not load - It just boots into the operating system when It attempts to load the disc; same goes for using a bootable USB.

Side Notes:

  1. Secure Boot is Disabled.
  2. Launch CSM - Enabled (Always) - Side note, if I have CSM disabled I get this error: "ERROR: No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed." When trying to use a bootable device.
  3. Boot Priority Order has been changed each time i've used a different medium. I.e. Set to CD/DVD drive when using a disc visa versa.
  4. Launch PXE OPROM & VIDEO OPROM - Set to Legacy.

I've even tried using the "Load Default Settings & Load User Default settings under the BIOS utility to no avail. Would me doing a Hardware CMOS reset using the jumper fix this?

Cheers.

is there a key u can press so u can pick what drive to boot from while your computer is starting up?

Yeah I've tried setting the default boot path and also manually selecting a boot device using F12.

You could try wiping the hard drive first. Then trying to boot from disk. I've had that problem with linux before as well.

Yeah I guess I could try that, how do you reccommend for me to wipe the drive? I could try Dban, but I don't know If it's gonna be able to read bootable device.

Well I would pull it out and hook it up to a working windows pc. I use a e-sata hot swap dock for this but you can hook it up directly if you don't have one. Also I use  MiniTool Partition Wizard Free for low level formatting, or you can always use windows disk management.

Cheers, I'll give it a go - I'll get back to you as to whether after a wipe I'm able to install Windows ! :)

Well that is odd, Are you sure your boot media is good? Will it load up in another computer? If so it could be the boot device priority. Make sure cd/dvd is at the top of the list and enabled. Otherwise maybe your disk drive could be having issues? I would recommend trying a bootable usb drive if you're still getting no where. Hope that helps I know how frustrating this sort of thing can be.

Wiped the drives clean, so no bootable OS available. Now I'm getting an Error: 5 still - No bootable devices present.

What are you using to create your installation media? Simply creating a data disc with an ISO on it won't work.

Follow these directions:

Would highly recommend going the USB boot device route.

Created bootable usb drives using Rufus and Win32DiskImager as well as ImgBurn to burn Windows 7 to discs. Neither of them work - And like I mentioned in my original post, I've tried selecting the boot device priority using the boot menu, as well as using boot manager in the BIOS to manually select a boot device on start up. Neither of them work, I just get an Error 5. I shall try it on another computer and get back to you though.

Yeah that sounds likely, you could try a different os like linux again or windows 10 and see if one of those will take. Otherwise the only thing I can think of would be checking if safe boot is enabled in the bios. you want to have it off for an install. also if it has uefi settings you want those off and switched to legacy boot only for windows 7.

Something I've done in the past  when I couldn't get a boot device to load is to hook up the hard drive to a working pc disconnect the others drives in it and do the first half of the install on that. then when it's done and says it's restarting to shut if off right after it reboots and put the drive back into it's original computer. Might be worth a shot?
