Here is my current build: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/6r9TXL

I have about $400 USD to spend on upgrades. I am willing to sell any replaced parts (and even plan on doing so) if that changes anything (everything but the hard drive is about 4 months old if that). I didn't include peripherals because I'm comfortable with what I have now. Please suggest what you think I should upgrade (e.g. CPU), what I should upgrade to (e.g. i5-4460), and why (if you want).

Thanks!

Well, with an i7, GTX 1080, Full tower and flashy lights, it can obviously only be for one thing:

problem is if you upgrade the CPU only to an i5 the video card will hold it back. If you upgrade to an R9 390 the CPU may hold it back. Here is what I would do. Buy an AMD r9 380, then spend the rest of the money on something like an i5 4690 (non-K).

Yeah, I knew that I would probably have to upgrade both.

What about a Xeon E3-1231 and a GTX 960? I do some recording, editing, and rendering and mostly CPU-intensive games. Which combo would work better? I chose the GTX 960 over the R9 380 because of my PSU. Would the R9 380 work on my current PSU?

The xeon is a good upgrade, but I dont know if you'll be able to do that and a GTX 960 in $400.

If someone. Tells you to get a 380 don't suggest a 960 to them they will just keep telling you to get a 380 no matter what. It's like 99% of people on here who do that.

I was planning on selling some parts. It'll be about $450 for those two.

It's not about performance. It's about my PSU being able to run it or not.

thats because they're talking about a pure gaming perspective in which case the 380 gives much more perf than the other combo..

Is waiting and saving more money a viable option for OP? New gpus are coming out plus zen and what not

yes, you will able to get by with an R9 380 on that PSU just fine. Also if you do do a lot of editing, a xeon 1231 v3 could indeed be worth buying over an i5 if you are willing to spend the extra $50 over an i5.

Ok, good to know. But I also know Adobe products as well as most recording programs tend to prefer NVidia GPUs.

Yeah, it's around $450, but why would I change the motherboard?

I switched that out whilst pricing up Z97 and never switched it back in so ye stick with that.
