Unraid requirements

Brechtjeu

Hello,

I supose you have seen aswell that Linus has posted quite a lot of UNRAID related video's lately. It got me interested but I'm only a student, I'm passionate about learning things that have to with computers and networking and such but I just don't have the money to build all the things i want to play and tinker with. Anyway, I'm sure this has been asked before but i just couldn't find a straight forward answer to my particual question.

I want to build a little NAS system (preferably using unraid as Rockstor didn't seem to work for me and FreeNAS is very RAM consuming). Just liek the one Linus has build in one of the latest videos but i just can't find anything that suits my budget and seems to be capable of running a decent system. The question is: Would an Intel core 2 Duo be capable of running a NAS server (running unraid) which also host's a Plex media server. I've been searching the web for this and Linus pointed out that you would preferably get an i3 machine of of Ebay (but those are just not around in my locality. ) So if I then add the Plex media server, and the transcoding that comes with it ontop of that, what would i need to put into the system?

Also if you have any experience with rockstor and know any good setup guides, I would like to get some more information on that one aswell as it didn't work for me before but I don't want to stop trying ;)

Thanks!

How many transcoded streams would you be planning on doing? a C2D could handle a single 1080p transcoded stream.

Nas4Free is another free NAS option you may want to consider.

Most of the time it's just one, to my chromecast, or at least for the near future. would it be able to handle simple NAS tasks at the same time? Or does that have more to do with the network?
