Encryption software for external storage devices

Hi,

Im just wondering if there is some kind of encryption software for external storage devices such as a external hdd. And is it possible if it works with both Windows and Mac? I have tried things like VeraCrypt, but that's not really what i had in mind. It would be cool to just plug in the device, no matter what OS, and then get prompted for a password.

 

Is there something like this? Or have I misunderstood the concept?

Short answer, no. There's no such thing, you would always need a program that handles the encryption, either Vault for OSX, Bitlocker for Windows (these don't work with each other) or a program like Veracrypt (which works cross platform).
