DC Power Supply

SoulKiller

I have a question for the community,

Some time ago I was researching some Cisco Switches and found that you can actually buy a PSUs for those devices that works with Direct Current (DC) instead of Alternate Current (AC) as a regular power supply does, so I was wondering if it could be possible to run a full gaming PC using just DC?

Now obviously the first response will be "why would you want to do that?" okay, if you are for example using a UPS to power your machine you are converting the DC saved in the battery to AC so the power supply can use it and reconvert it to DC, each time this happens there is a lost of energy because this converter aren't 100% efficient so, if you could just use the DC from the UPS to directly power your machine this could give you a better performance, and 0 noise since the PSUs that I found (http://www.mini-box.com/DC-DC) don't have any fans.

So ... what do you guys think ?? Is it doable??

Cheers,

SK

You will still need to step-up and step-down the voltage from a UPS to be usable for a computer. That in itself is involves losses. You will also need to recharge the battery once it is drained. Another step that involves losses.

Modern PSUs are very efficient that it is the best way to power a computer.
