Hi

I want to build my self a new PC and have chosen the parts on pc parts list.

I will buy the bits slowly over time:S starting with the case and ending with the CPU and GPU.

Is there anything I should be aware of before starting or compatibility issues? Any ideas?

The parts list:

Thanks in advance:)

wait for when you have all the money to buy the parts all at once. If you do it over time, new parts will come out and some parts might not be compatible.

Perhaps you could tell us your budget and we could help you put together something you could use in the near future.

On a side-note, starting with the case isn't the best idea, as you can build all of the usable components into another case and buy that later, giving you a usable machine earlier.

I did think of that but the problem is I tend to spend money as soon as it comes for various reasons.

So I decided to start with things like the case, CD drive, PSU and SSD etc.

And the way Intel is going it doesn't look like any powerful possessors will be coming any time soon.

That´s actually quite a good point. Still, zen might have something to say about everything.

I don't have a buget as such but under £5500

I want to start with the things that are unlikely to get out of date in-case better hardware comes out.

Well, I doubt the 5960x will be out of date anytime soon, but the 6950x is due soon with an extra two cores on it, and will almost certainly have Intel slash prices on the 5960x.

The case and cooling seem like the most logical things to start with in that respect, but prices will drop on older gear as time goes by. This goes triple for SSDs which are dropping like nothing else in terms of price, with a solid 1TB SSD from Mushkin going for just over $225.

I don't know a thing about Quadro cards, but I have a feeling the 980 Ti is going to sell for a lot less once its Pascal-based successor hits the market (The GTX 1080?).

However, with a  £5500 target budget, you can probably afford to wait and get the latest and have this build last you half a decade or more.

Thanks, first I've heard of the 6950x. Any idea what socket it will use?

I just put the 980ti as a model for the latest GPU, but I do want a Pascal If it proves to be much better than the 980.

I chose the Quadro M4000 because its fairly cheap workstation GPU with 4K multi monitor and it comes as 8th GPU in Passmark. Also it uses one slot and I need the slots for serial ports and parallel ports.

The 980 can go at the end therefore not using two slots.

The 6950x is going to hang on the same socket as the others- LGA 2011-3.

Well, by observing the pattern of flagship GPUs, you can discern certain things. The 'Ti' editions perform considerably better than their regular counterparts, but are normally introduced much later after the initial batch is deployed. Also, the standard variant is likely to succeed the previous 'Ti' edition.

An example on the high-end side- GTX 780 < GTX 780 Ti < GTX 980 < GTX 980 Ti, leading me to believe that next in line is the GTX 1080.

For mid-range GPUs, there's this - GTX 650 < GTX 650 Ti < GTX 750 < GTX 750 Ti < GTX 950. If there is to be a 950 Ti (a stupid move with the 960, but, if, in theory-), then the GTX 1050 is likely to succeed it.

Like I said, I don't know anything about Quadro GPUs- I've never looked into Workstation graphics cards.
