Hi guys!

I'm from Italy and I'm pretty new here, but I hope you could help me anyway!

As titled I'm looking to a 15" laptop with 4K, i would use it for:

- photography (that's why 4k, i would like to see more detail in the same time without zooming)

- working (Programming most)

- university (IT)

- gaming a bit

I also would like to be able to expand RAM if necessary and install a fast SSD as the Samsung 950 Pro so the M.2 slot should be PCIe and not SATA.

I would love to have also gig ethernet port (that's unusual these days :()

Thanks in advice to anyone!

Customise with the 4K display panel and you're good to go. There are 2 M.2 slots, one of them being a PCIe 3.0 x4/SATA and the other one is just purely SATA.

So:

  • Dell 7559
  • Lenovo Y700
  • Sager NP8657-S

Any others? :)

Depends on your budget. Here's a European Clevo reseller who is selling pretty much the same thing as the Sager.

I usually don't try to tell people to change their mind about a product, but for an 15 inch you won't be seeing any more details at 4K than at FullHD, because after that point you will have to enlarge/scale the content of windows and/or the editing software that you are using. I have an old 15" laptop that is 800p and there the icons in photoshop are really small.

Of course, the monitor itself will look more crisp, but you will reduce your battery life and performance (4K demands much more from the GPU) and as I said: no real benefit in terms of workspace. So my recommendation is to get a FullHD (or even a QHD) laptop and invest the money you'll save on a proper external monitor with good color reproduction (Adobe RGB 96+ %), IPS and about 27".  That is much more important. And when we start talking screen sizes that big, THEN fullHD vs 4K starts to matter a lot. But not on a 15"

As for laptops with those specs: MSI GS60 6QE, Asus ROG 501/Zenbook Pro UX501, the above mentioned models by other posts

Sounds a bit like the Aorus x5s I just pre-ordered on.  Three m.2s which can support 950 Pros, plus a 2" bay for another SSD or magnetic drive; 4k display, 64GB RAM max (4 slots) and of course a 980M

If I buy a laptop is for use it around, so the external monitor doesn't make sense at all.

By the way I'll look to the others you said

Hey, cool man if you don't need a stationary work place. I was just suggesting a solution for when you are at home and could hook up the laptop to an external monitor.

My point still stands though: You won't get a lot more workspace out of wasting money on a 4K display at 15". Just look around at different videos about 4K on laptops: Everyone says it looks crisp, looks gorgeous, but since the damn scaling does not work, you won't really benefit from it.

But, that's up to you now. Good luck with your purchase. Please tell us whichever laptop you choose. I'm curious to know what this discussion will lead to. :D

I'll prefer take a 4K for the higher pixel density that when you look to a photo, for me, you see the difference, that's mine opinion btw :D

For that thing about the monitor is just because I prefer use my PC rig than a laptop when at home ;):D

You'll be the first to know :)
