Hello guys,

I am dealing with a possibly broken hard drive on my laptop, Gateway ne56r49u. My mouse also does not work. The problem started after I hit the computer on the front left where the hard drive is (yes, I know, I was extremely stressed, and I kind of lost control), and it blue screened, and I had to shut it off. It turned on the next time, and I tried to back up, only to have a failure while trying to transfer files. In retrospect, I probably should've just made a disk image. The files stopped transferring halfway through, and I was only able to transfer some. The mouse issues occurred after about 3-4 restarts. A month later, it now boots extremely slowly, and most of the icons show up as blank icons, not to mention the mouse is still broken. I thankfully am not concerned about saving what is on the drive, but I am upset that my laptop does not work. Do you guys suggest I try and replace the hardrive, or just throw it away? The thing that gets me is that the mouse doesn't work. Thank you in advance.

lol you remind me of when i was a kid and i played a game called free realms on a very shitty acer laptop. (i didnt know anything about computers back then) the game was very laggy because of probably the weak graphics that it had and also the fact that it has 2gb of ram so i slammed my fist on the laptop palm rest and the whole thing blue screened also. my dad ended up throwing the shitbox out and then a family friend gave us a shitty dell tower and i tried playing my games on it and lagged on there as well so i took a hammer and hit the side lol and the tower just died. anyways enough about me. your laptops hdd probably is physically damaged as the computer was on when you hit it so that disk was rotating and chances are the header crashed into the actual disk itself and damaged your drive and your data. that is probably why it failed when you tried to back up the data. the extremely slow boot up time and missing icons is also a sign that the drive was damaged so bad that the data in the drive started to become corrupted. if you want to sink in money to such an old laptop because of sentimental values then go ahead and get a new drive. personally for me if that laptop doesn't have any sentimental value then id just accept the loss and chuck it out or salvage for usable parts like the Optical Drive or the RAM then chuck it out.

Thank you, I am actually not quite sure what I want to do with it. I might just do what you said, and salvage for old parts, and scrap it. Then again, I am not quite sure at the moment. The story you included was funny haha.

Sure, thanks. I was looking at running light to medium games, but mostly just as a web browsing and writing machine. My budget is $700-$900 dollars.

It's fine, I am grateful that you are helping me xD. I prefer Dell, MSI, or HP especially. Also, if it could be not too heavy, that would be great. I don't need it to be extremely light but I would prefer that it is not too heavy, thank you.

HP http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00INC863U/?tag=portablepicker-20

DELL http://www.amazon.com/dp/B015PYYDMQ/?tag=portablepicker-20 (the dell has SSD so no worries damaging it by hitting it lol)

Acer http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1117908-REG/acer_nx_mnhaa_012_v3_i7_5500u_12gb_1tb_windows8_164_15_6.html

MSI http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152903&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-PCPartPicker,%20LLC-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=7930973&SID= (i personally own this laptop and all i can say is when gaming it runs pretty loud if playing demanding games and it has a 2 to 3 hour battery life. but it is very powerful and i got it for $799 on newegg during black friday sales)
