tl;dr: I want to buy some Enzotech MOS-C1 kits to cool my VRMs. Scared of the sticky tape they come with falling off and the heatsink shorting something out. Thinking of buying Arctic Silver Alumina or other thermal adhesive to make sure the heatsinks never come off.

Spoiler

Okay, so the story goes, I've had an extremely sketchy budget for building a PC over the past few years. I've basically had to piece together a frankenstein computer, much similar to what we see in Scrapyard Wars. Until some time in the future when I get finances sorted out to build a new system, I'm stuck with what I've duct-taped together as my personal rig, as follows;

CPU: AMD Phenom X4 9500 2.2GHz (OC to 2.5GHz through bus OCing)

CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i

RAM: 2x2GB DDR2 667MHz (OC to 913MHz through bus OC)

GPU: EVGA GTX 950 (+65C +670M, 1489MHz boost)

Motherboard: ASUS M2N68-AM SE2

PSU: Corsair CX430M

Case: Corsair Obsidian 350D

A mish-mash of random components, yes, I know. I've run all of my stress tests, and other than having to work around a hardware fault in the CPU, everything has come out as stable so far.

I rarely, if ever, have any applications crash on me, and I've put this computer through more 100% load than I probably should have with this PSU. So far, nothing's exploded on me, and through the extensive testing that I've done, the computer seems to be legitimately stable for now...

Except for one thing. When I place my CPU under extremely high load for a long period of time, it ends up throttling. The CPU temperature will get up to something like 51-53 degrees C, and then the CPU will throttle down to 1.2GHz until the CPU temp is somewhere in the range of 40-46C. Then the CPU will step back up and stay at 2.5GHz for a minute or two, before throttling again.

I've looked into it and narrowed it down to probably being an issue with my motherboard's VRM/MOSFET/CPU power delivery section overheating. I've added a 40mm fan to blow down on the VRM section and it ended up helping with the throttling. My CPU now goes for longer periods of time at 100% load before throttling.

So, my current situation; my CPU throttles when under heavy load and I still want to see if I can get maybe just a little more OCing out of it. Upgrading my motherboard is not an option at this point in time.

I've been looking at buying some Enzotech MOS-C1 heatsinks for my VRMs, but I don't know if I should trust the thermal adhesive tape that they're supposed to come with. I'm afraid that one of the heatsinks might eventually come loose and fall down onto my graphics card and short something out, so I've been looking at possibly buying something like Arctic Silver Alumina; one of the permanent thermal adhesives.

So I wanted to ask the LTT community, do you guys think that I should go for the thermal superglue, or just stick with the thermal tape that the heatsinks come with?

You been Pork'd.
