Hey everyone, trying to record some footage for /r/ultrawidemasterrace to show which games support 21:9. Now I know recording 60FPS at 3440x1440 would be insanely difficult, but I have it downscaled to 1720x720. I'm not streaming, but just recording to upload to YouTube later on. I'm not as in tune with screen capture software and a lot of the settings are alien to me, that's why I'm here. What settings would I want to adjust in OBS? Any help is appreciated thanks.

Firstly, which OBS are you using? Normal or Multi-Platform?

Normal version, sorry about that

it's k.

Things to look at and possibly change for local recording:

  • Encoding > Max Bitrate:

    This is how high quality and also how big the file will be for your recording. Mine is 25000 kb/s. That's kinda (really) high. I just like quality and have ample storage tho, both in size and speed.

    Remember. Downscaling always brings the quality down. Upscaling doesn't always bring the quality up (i.e. 480p -> 1080p looks like smudgy mess).

    So take a note from most content creators and realize that you need the best possible original you can get.

  • Encoding > Audio Encoding can basically be wtv. Audio doesn't take up much space, so better is better tho.

  • Broadcast Settings > Replay Buffer length

    Not useful if you are planning on recording everything. Only useful if you plan on using Replays for after-the-fact recording. i.e. you do something cool and aren't recording and want to get it recorded.

  • Advanced > Video > x264 CPU Preset && Encoding Profile

    These decide quality and CPU usage in tandem, basically. Trial and error looking for how much quality you can get without too much in-game performance loss due to CPU usage being maxed out.

Those are the only settings that matter for local recording that I know of.

Note that Multi-Platform version has different features. Some features are missing, but some are new and useful.
