Built In Headphone Mic
Alright, I have a pair of Monster DNA headphones and I need some help. Currently i have both cables running to my cases header. One cable has a built in mic and i was wondering if i cound use it as a normal mic. For some reason sound only comes out of one side if only one cord is in, so i have 2 cords (one for each ear) Does anybody know how to get the mic working if possible?
If your headphone requires a left and right side cable, instead of a single cable that combines both, you might need to plug the cables into the left and right channel ports of your soundcard, or get a Y-splitter that will combine the two into one connection.
However that's just for getting sound to come out of the headphone's speakers. As for the mic, that's a tricky matter, as mics that are usually built right into the cable of a headphone tend to use 4 pole jacks and computer sound cards tend to have 3 pole ports at most. In which case you need another splitter cable that will split the 4 pole jack into 2 separate jacks, one for the sound and one for the mic.
EDIT: checking the website of that brand, a few things:
- One of the ports on the headphones is meant to share audio with another pair of headphones so that you can share what you are listening to with other friends. So that's definitely not the side where you want to plug in the audio from your computer.
- The cable with the mic is most likely a 4 pole TRRS jack, and the audio ports on your computer tend to be standard 3 poles. See image attached as a reference to what I am talking about. 4 pole jacks require a splitter cable to split the audio left/right poles from the mic pole before being attached to a computer.
- So if you don't have a splitter, use the other cable to connect to the computer and keep the cable with the mic only for use with a phone.
