CPU at 3.6GHz?

So today my computer just shut off as it got to hot while playing a game.... which is weird as under a heavy load CPU gets to about 60-65C but i noticed it got about 75c.
After restarting and looking around i noticed the CPU wasn't running at 3.3GHz like every other day for the past 4 months i have owned it, it was going up to 3.6GHz which my current cooler cant handle that heat as ambient temp today was like 35c
Why is my CPU running .3GHz faster then before while Task Manager and BIOS even says Maximum speed 3.3GHz
I haven't touched the OC feature of my motherboard for that to be enabled and i checked and its still turned off.

Whats going on?????

Also im thinking of getting a 240mm rad, would that be a good idea any way for my CPU?

what? a dark rock pro should easily handle 3.6 GHz... what is your ambient temp?

-snip-

It's called TurboBoost - your CPU will speed up while doing intensive tasks, in your case up to 3.6 GHz ;)

You can disable it in BIOS if you want.

As far as the rad is concerned, you mean a complete AIO cooler? I believe it could help ;)

Ambient temp when it happened was about 35c.... and my dark rock is only running on 1 fan as the outer fan wouldn't fit with my RAM cause stupid me bought hi profile ram xD
So another reason to get water cooling i suppose......

Weird thing is i have NEVER seen it go above 3.3GHz and i have had it for about 4 months now

AHHHHH i worked it out, Today i downloaded MSI COmmand Center so i could change my fan curves without going in to the BIOS and it set all my clocks to 3.6GHz.....
But here is the best bit, i was ticking them all and setting to 3.3GHz but nothing was happening..... then i just worked out there was an Apply button.................

Edit- Slow clapping to my self......

its not permanent if you do it via MSI cc. As soon as you restart it's gone.

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

But it was MSI CC that was changing it, not the BIOS or OC mode just the CC mode its self http://puu.sh/msILc/4c1d667a06.png
So set it all to x33 so should stay at 3.3GHz

Ok so i was playing a game and Computer turned off again...... wtf is happening, i dont think it over heated was just over 65c

i THINK that MSI CC is crashing my comp

What PSU are you using?

I would try removing the 750Ti just to rule it out and reinstalling the CPU cooler if you're at all worried that overheating is the issue.  You'll be able to tell by looking at the old thermal paste if the cooler was making good contact with the CPU.

And after un-installing MSI CC i haven't crashed once so i believe that to be the cause...... shitty manufacturer software xD
