Website help for total noob?

Hey all, I plan on making a simple website to put files on and put basic info on. 

 

Here is what I have so far:

- Dedicated server (got old dell off ebay)

- Domain name (キティ.みんな)

 

Now I'm trying to figure out what to do from here. What tools should I use to make a basic website? What linux distro should I put on the desktop, or should I do something like windows server? I'll take any help on the subject!

Do you know HTML and CSS? That'd be a good place to start... If you don't already know how to make a website. Or are you just interested in hosting a site?

 

Atom is a great piece of software for coding (at least on the free side of things).

Just hosting a basic site, don't plan on learning to code (again, just a little project)

On a serious note, try Weebly. It's free for the first five sites (I think). It's pretty OK.

As for the OS I would pick something like Ubuntu Server, CentOS, or Red Hat

Something like Squarespace would probably be your best bet, to be perfectly honest. But you want to host this, so... bleh. I dunno. Never tried this before.

Also, I didn't think you could use hiragana and katakana as a domain name string. Are you gonna romanize them? because I'm pretty sure that you can't.

Yea, it's some cool thing google did a year back. Romanji doesn't work, but what I plan on doing is using an english domain and forwarding it to that (ushi.okinawa for now)

If you're looking to host a site but don't want to code I would recommend looking into getting a CMS. Wordpress is a good one, but there are many different options out there.

I bought my domain separate but honestly my uncle setup the whole wordpress bit so I cant really help you there but hit me up if you wanna make your site look nice
