Skyrim DLCs question?

Go to solution Solved by Techicolors,

yeah, it just gets added.

dawnguard adds the castles, dragonborn adds solstheim (you get there via a ship - yes you can still go back to skyrim)

Im currently lvl 17 on vanilla skyrim, what happens if i buy the DLCs ?

Does an aditional area just get added to the vanilla map , or what?

Once the DLC packs are released they are automatically added to the game world, access to these areas then just requires you to have purchased the DLC.

Also Hearthfire just adds new points of interest (build sites and map markers) to otherwise empty space. Also added are some house specific crafting items, and a use for the sawmills scattered about Skyrim.

Dawnguard changes the Hall of the Vigilant for what it's worth.

Will it mess with the mods i have installed (graphics mods) if i install it now on my current save?

no it really shouldn't mess with your mods.  The DLC will be loaded earlier in your load order, either because of it being handled by steam or injected by MO.

Mods later in the list/load order replace whatever was there earlier (in terms of identical file name and file path)

The image posted shows me selecting the dawngaurd DLC in BLUE, GREEN are things the highlighted mod/DLC trump, and RED are mods/DLC that overwrite parts of the highlighted(blue) mod/DLC.

So, as long as your mods are after the DLC(s) it'll maintain the improvements you've made.  This is also partly why almost every mod author asks to be placed last in the load order, so their changes "win" and minimize the issues they could otherwise have to deal with from conflicts.

However if you're still on NMM, then....:shrugs: meh, IDK.  Maybe, maybe not.

ah ok thanks,

i belive ill ned to reinstall some mods (double click 2 times :P) because i chose the non-DLC versions of them

and NMM does have a load order thing, that manages it for you
