Hello everyone,

I just built my PC a week ago and now I'm ready to overclock. This is my first time ever I Overclock

My goal is to get a stable OC @ 4,5 Ghz

First some of my Pc Specs.

Mainboard: MSI Z170 Gaming M5

CPU: 6600k

GPU: MSI R9 390

PSU: BeQuiet Dark Power Pro 10 650Watt

Ram: G.Skill 3000Mhz 8gb kits

So, I watched Linus' OC Guide for Skylake CPU's and I was stable @ 4,5Ghz and 1.3V for 10 minutes in Aida64.

Temps raised up to about 72°c

Now hopefully you guys can help me, I'm asking you guys, what would be the best setting for everyday use and a stable OC @ 4,5Ghz

The MSI Gamng M5 has 6 Settings:

Auto

Adaptive Mode

Override Mode

Offset Mode

Adaptive + Offset

Override + Offset

Right now I'm in Auto mode, I guess it's the wrong setting to stay with. But I have no idea what setting to choose and which one would be the best.

First I need to know which setting should I take and then I want to go down with the voltage. I dont want to stay at max voltage all the time

Hope you guys can help me further!

Ok, so Auto mode is fine for Voltage.

For a simple OC it's totally fine to change multiplier to 45 then add voltage.

The first thing to try would be to stick to 1.3v and put the multiplier to 46. I believe 4.6Ghz should be obtainable at that V for a fairly decent CPU.

Run AIDA for at least an hour, the longer the better.

If it crashes then increase V to 1.325v and try again.

Keep increasing V until it becomes stable or you hit 80℃ (a few °s over will be fine). I'd also suggest 1.4v as the absolute maximum, stay below that if possible.

You should easily hit 4.6Ghz and be able to keep below 80 with that cooler.

For reference my 6700K runs at 4.7Ghz @ 1.39v.

The problem is, that when my system is Idling, my core voltage doesn't go down, it stays at that voltage all the time.

And I think 4,5Ghz is enough for me, that 100Mhz would not make that of a huge difference, so I'd rather keep the 4,5Ghz and go with the voltage as low as possible.

Since this is my first time OCing I dont want to overkill it :D 4,5Ghz is fine for me.

Change voltage mode to adaptive and enable speed step if you want the v to auto adjust.

I think you misunderstood ne however, I think you could hit 4.6Ghz at your current voltage (1.3v) without an issue.

And trust me, unless your running at 1.4v or 80℃ plus over a long period you will not damage your cpu.

Oh, ok now I understand what you mean.

Alright I give it a try.

Aight I OC'd my 6600k at 4,5Ghz@1,275v(Bios says 1,288v at maximum), ran CineBench R15 and a full hour stress test with Aida64 and it's stable.

Is it good?

yes that's fine
