i ran into a big problem, i need a cheap motherboard (on ebay) that has PCIE X16 on it.  But i dont know which way to go. any alternatives? (With socket for LGA771  and must have pcie X16) otherwise   i have the choice between :

 http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon1333/5400/X7DWT.cfm

and: http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon1333/5100/X7DCA-L.cfm

Any ideas?

The first one is going to be hard to find a case for; it looks proprietary.

pcie gen3 16x im assuming?

The first one is gen 2 16x which is like gen3 8x from what I've heard.

And the second one doesnt even list which generation is is from what I see so its probably gen 1.

need it to be able to run (at least) a Sapphire Radeon HD5450

Do you REALLY just use win98?

Win95 is far superior.

certain LGA775 mobos would work too, but you need a mod sticker and some skill with an Xacto knife to make it work.

Note: a mod sticker is usually about a dollar

Could you give me a list? and some links?  that would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know about compatibility in most cases, Perhaps you could see if anyone on here knows how to tell.

What processor do you have? If it's an xeon for LGA771 it should work but otherwise you would be taking a bit of a risk.

I didn't mean that kind of case, lol

Seeing as it is an xeon the adapter should work but compatibility with your motherboard is another issue, it may be beneficial to make a thread asking whether or not the motherboard you have in mind is compatible with your processor, you should also specify that you will be using an adapter for the motherboard.

so, you're saying i should get an adapter and go with a lga 775 motherboard? BTW i was reading the "Case" part way too seriously xD

the sticker I told you about is technically an adapter, it just switches two pins around on the processor and allows it to work on an LGA 775 motherboard.

EDIT: It looks like this when it's on the processor

First-rate-771turn775-sticker-LGA-771-to

When the processor has this mod you need to aling it so the triangle is aligned with the one on the socket arm/bracket, and the sticker must be removed to function in an LGA771 motherboard

However doing this mod means your less likely to be compatible with the motherboard you have so it's always best to make sure. I don't really know how to tell so that's why I suggested making a thread asking if the motherboard you have in mind is compatible

Sorry if i'm confusing you, i'm bad with words.

no, its ok i haven't  decided on a  motherboard yet  so, i will start a new thread  about compatibility with the lga 775 boards, although  it is designed for lga 771 and it uses 80W (approx) therefore i think i will have trouble in the area of performance and wattage that the board can take.

The Q6600 which is designed for the LGA775 uses 101 Watts, you will be fine in terms of wattage, but I will agree that it is possible you may suffer perfomance issues on the LGA775 platform
