Hello. I have just installed Intel i7-4790K and I'm not overclocking, just want it for gaming and fast multitasking.

One of my cores just got to 58 C (136 F) at about 30% utilization of the CPU while doing some tasks getting the system ready after Windows installation.

I haven't tried gaming yet.

I use i7-4790K with Corsair H60 with Noctua NF-P12 fan.

I didn't get over 60 C with my AMD FX-8370 with the same cooler and fan.

Could it be that I applied too little thermal paste? I applied less than I do on my old AMD cpu's, because this Intel CPU has

smaller surface. I just put a little dot in the middle. Can thermal paste become too old? I think it's a couple years old in the little tube, but looked fine.

Or is the cooler not good enough for this CPU?

Thanks! (:

58C isn't hot.

The H60 isn't a particularly good cooler.

Too little is often just right, and too much is far worse in regards to temps.

The cooler will be fine, probably up to ~1.275 vcore before you're hitting the mid 80's (85-90C is hot for that chip).

I would check your thermal compound, probably ok but you could eliminate that as a possible cause, also check fan speed for that Noctua.

Thanks for the replies.

Thanks, yea I will try to put on something from a newer tube, and look how it spread out.

The Noctua is running at full speed.

I don't...The platform runs hot as shit (toasty VRM's anyone?), physical cores, not so much. Then again there's no real temp sensor on the cores, so who knows how hot the damn things are.

You can get near accurate temperatures at full load and I even add an extra 10c to the displayed temperatures to get a good estimate, plus my VRMs are quite cold and I dont have a case designed for airflow. The 9xxx series is were VRMs get hot, below that they are no different than Intel from what I have seen in terms of temperatures and sometimes better. I have a buddy who has an ASUS board with no VRM heatsinks what so ever and his 8350 overclocked to 4.5Ghz for the past 3 years, temperatures seem to be fine and I was shocked when I saw it. Still working to this day as a folding rig. The VRM fire thing is BS unless you have a 9xxx series chip running at full load on an under adequate board.
