Hello,

I have a problem with my 5TB Seagate Backup Plus.

The drive goes to sleep in less than a minute of inactivity, that doesn't bother me I actually prefer it! BUT now and then (50 times a day) it just wakes up and makes a horrible annoying noise. It gets woken up for no reason! So I prefer if it never goes to sleep, but I cant get it to do so!

So far:
I've tweeked power options properly.
I have installed seagate dashboard and set it to never sleep there...

and so far NO LUCK!

I also couldn't find the process which is waking the drive!

I want it to either never sleep OR for it to doesn't get spin up for no reason + every time I open My Computer or right click the mouse on anything!

Any ideas?

PS - Running Windows 10 build 10565

Hey there Antwan,

The drive may have some requests from the OS or an applications every once in a while and thus spinning up to respond to it. Check which applications may be doing this and search for an option to disable it. I'd also check the features of the drive as there may be one that prevents the drive from staying in standby mode for longer. Check if BIOS has some options connected to this. I'd check the health of the drive just to be on the safe side that your data is secure and contact the manufacturer's support and see what the guys there have to say. :)

I used "Process Explorer" to try and find what is harassing the drive, but couldn't find anything.

I used "Seagate Dashboard' software, which has an option to chose when the drive to go to sleep... and I've set it to never sleep, but it doesn't seem to work.

Looked around in the BIOS, but couldn't find anything that may have affected this...

There may be a feature that is built in in the drive's firmware. I would check with the manufacturer's support. It may be a good idea to test the drive on another computer and see if the behavior persists.
Keep us posted on how this is going. :)

Best solution I got so far... just unplug the damn thing!

It even slows down my PC, on random events my PC stutters while it wakes it up. For example when I right click on something... or when I move a file in a folder (on a completely different drive).

As the owner of 2 Seagate 5TB Expansion disks I can verify that they do indeed bog down my system when leaving them plugged in. No strange noises here though.

These really are just backup disks and are pretty much useless for anything else. Plug in, copy/move data, remove again ASAP.

That's one way of doing this :) As long as you don't need them constantly plugged in this may very well be the best solution to the problem.
The manufacturer's support should have an answer to why the drive is spinning up every once in a while with no reason.

No solution. Found only one person on the web with the same issue, but no solution.

If you need the drives plugged in all the time, you'd be better off calling the manufacturer's support and ask for a solution for the spinning up problem.
