Hello,

I have a HDD that is dying. It's been acting weird the last days, but since yesterday evening I can't access it at all. Last week it happened as well briefly, but when I restarted windows it ran chkdsk on it, and after that it was "fine".

I know the drive is dying and I should replace it, but there is some data on it that I want to get off it (not end-of-the-world important stuff, but I do really want it back).

I tried running a chkdsk /f on the drive, but it fails: "file sector segment 16815 is readable but unwritable". Tried it a second time and it was a different sector (16855).

Sometimes it shows up in My Computer like this (the right one):

but I can't open it.

Any suggestions?

Stef

how have you troubleshooted so far?

edit: anything other than what you have said?

Tried a different SATA-port, SATA cable, also a different drive in the same port, with the same cable works fine, if that is what you mean.

Also, I should add that I put it in a USB enclosure now, because my system was crapping it's pants for some reason when it was in a sata port.

Hey there Stefken89,

What's the drive's brand and model? Try running chkdsk /r and see if the bad sectors can be isolated for long enough for you to get the data back. Your best bet would be contacting a data recovery company but do have in mind that their services are quite costly. Another option would be to use a partition/data recovery software and see if you can access the drive with it. Also you can try opening it with Linux Live CD.
Have in mind that the more attempts you do the lower the chance of getting the data back. :)

it's a seagate ST3000DM001.

Chkdsk /r couldn't complete.

It doesn't show up in ubuntu. I have never worked with linux before, so is there anything I could try there?

Thank you for your help.

Since the chkdsk /r can't complete and it's not recognized in Linux the drive must have failed. I would contact a data recovery company or look for help with other professional data recovery services or people. :)

Yeah... It's very weird though. If I wait long enough the drive is visible in diskmanagement and shows up as a RAW disk. I tried some software to scan it for lost partitions and files and some of them have come up, but by the time the scan has finished the drive loses connection and I have to start all over again. It just behaves so slowly that I can't do anything with it, even if I can get at the data with recovery programs or any other way (one time a search in explorer gave me files on that HDD! I tried to copy them, but it failed).

At this point I've given up on the data. I would've like some it back but it's not worth hundreds of euros to get it back.

Thanks anyway for your help/time, really appreciate it!

Apparently the OS has troubles accessing the drive and this causes delays in Disk Management and chkdsk failures. The drive does have serious issues and if you'd like to get any of the data, a data recovery company may be your only way. Other than that I would suggest to simply retire the drive and replace it with a new one. :)
