I've been in need of a new keyboard for quite a while now, but I can't find the information that I need. I need someone to tell me what CherryMX keyswitch is most like the old Dell keyboard mechanical ALPS (Model number AT101W). I think that Browns may be the ones that are most like it, but I'd like some advice on which CherryMX that is like it.

Every topic I post in dies.

From my experience I would say the Black Alps from a Dell at101w are more similar to Cherry Mx Black switches as they feel very linear and have a higher force requirement to actuate, although they do not have a audible click neither does the Dell at101w. The main sound you hear from that keyboard you should hear with the Cherry Mx Black switches.

Someone on Geekhack said this which sounds logical to me :)

I'd go with a g710+ from logitech cause of the o rings under each keycap and how that makes them feel a little softer. I'll be a more natural switch for you from a membrane keyboard.

I don't have a Black ALPS to compare with, so I have no reference point with which to assess the similarities and differences. It's a personal thing, I would suggest that you head out to a shop where they have various switches to try out, and give them a go. Only you can decide for yourself what feels right or wrong, and make up your mind from there. I started out with Red, next blue and Brown, but now, my fave Cherry switches are Black and Green. IF Black ALPS is linear and you like the linear feel, then Brown may not be to your liking, then as the GH guys had said, Black would perhaps be better in that it's linear and a heavier switch type. I started to really like Black ever since going Topre, for that heavier but linear feel. Heck, I'm typing this post on my Keycool 84 LED with Cherry Black, am so loving it!:D

Thanks for the advice, I'll see if I can try blacks somewhere to see if I like them.

Edit: Can people recommend CherryMX Black keyboards for me? Even though I don't know if I'm going to go with them, I'd just like to see some of the Black keyboards.

using browns totally awesome.

Perhaps for you, may not be the OP's thing, but he has to try out some switches first before deciding. I have Red, Black, Brown, Blue and Green, as well as Topre.....my fave switch kind of changed over the months, but with the Topres, I have decided on Black. Going to see if I can change the YOTS Blue to a Black since they are expected in by end of the month at the very latest.

I do plan to try out the keyswitches first.

If you don't have a retail store nearby that offers the switches for you to try, you could get a sampler kit from WASD: http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/index.php/products/sampler-kit-1.html
